Not every couple wants champagne flutes, matching robes, or a perfectly curated version of their relationship. Instead, some couples want photos that feel grounded and true to their everyday life. Some couples just want photos that actually feel like their life.
Hannah and Mikey told me right away they are not into really fancy things. They did not want their engagement session to feel stiff or overly planned. They just wanted to document a regular weekend together at a place they already love and spend time at. A place where they feel comfortable being themselves.
That mindset alone already told me everything I needed to know about them.

With that in mind, we met at The Royal American.
If you are from Charleston and love live music, you probably already know it well. You can check out The Royal American here: https://www.theroyalamerican.com/. It is a music venue and dive bar that has been part of the local scene for years. Loud shows, sticky floors, cheap drinks, and a whole lot of character. It is the kind of place that feels lived in, not polished.
I have been going to The Royal American for a long time, and because of that, getting to photograph an engagement session there felt especially meaningful to me. It felt familiar and full circle, like mixing my real life with my work in the best way.
For Hannah and Mikey, it made perfect sense. They are regulars there. It is part of their routine. It is where they actually spend time together, not just a backdrop for photos.
From the moment they walked in, the energy felt relaxed. No nerves. No pressure to perform. Just two people hanging out.
They drank High Lifes. Took Rumple Minze shots. I even took my very first rumpie shot with them, which feels like an important milestone I did not know I needed.
Nothing felt forced. We were not rushing from spot to spot or trying to make anything look a certain way. We just let the night unfold how it normally would.
That is when the best moments happen.

Hannah wore a short white dress with a vintage 1920s flapper feel and bright red Betsey Johnson heels she has always wanted. The kind of heels you buy because you love them, not because you are waiting for the perfect occasion.
Mikey wore a dark suit with a vest and a red tie with his worn in Doc Martens. Simple, classic, and effortlessly cool.
The red accents tied everything together perfectly and matched The Royal American’s vibe without trying too hard. It all felt very natural, like their style just happened to fit the space.

Sessions like this are exactly why I love what I do. I have now photographed engagement sessions at three different dive bars, and every single one has felt different in the best way. From Burns Alley, to Recovery Room, Cuttys and now The Royal American, each space brings its own character into the story. Each bar has its own personality, and each couple brings their own energy into the space.
They feel relaxed and honest, leaving space for real personality instead of chasing perfection. There is no expectation to pose a certain way or look a certain way. You get to just exist together.
If traditional engagement photos are not your thing and you would rather document your relationship somewhere meaningful, a dive bar engagement session might be exactly what you are looking for. Whether that is your favorite bar, a bowling alley, an arcade, or a place you go every weekend, those locations usually tell a much better story.
Hannah and Mikey did exactly that. They chose something familiar, fun, and true to who they are.
And honestly, that is always going to win.
