Wind, Waterfront Views & One Very Easy “Yes”
If you’re planning a Charleston Battery proposal, there’s a good chance you’re dreaming of historic homes, waterfront views, giant oak trees, and all that classic Southern charm Charleston is known for.
This proposal had all of that.
It also had winds that could’ve knocked us over, bright afternoon sunshine, dramatic shadows, and one of the sweetest reactions I’ve ever had the privilege of photographing.
As a Charleston proposal photographer, I get to witness one of the biggest moments in people’s lives over and over again. Somehow, it never gets old. My heart still races before every proposal because I know what’s about to happen. In just a few minutes, someone’s world is going to change forever.
This one was no different.
She Thought They Were Just Going for a Walk
One of my favorite things about proposals is watching someone completely unsuspecting enjoy what they think is just another afternoon together.
They wandered along The Battery, taking in the harbor and the beautiful old homes, while he quietly carried the biggest secret of the day.
Meanwhile, I was trying to act casual from a distance, hoping she wouldn’t notice the girl with the giant camera pretending to admire the scenery.
Then he stopped, as well as all of our hearts.
He reached into his pocket.
And just like that, everything changed.
The Sweetest “Yes”
The second she realized what was happening, her entire face lit up.
She laughed.
She cried.
She kept covering her mouth because I don’t think she could quite believe it was actually happening.
Those are always my favorite reactions because you simply can’t fake them.
Every bit of excitement, every tear, every laugh… it’s all completely real.
Watching two people step into the next chapter of their lives is something I’ll never take for granted.
Happy Tears & Cloud Nine
One of my favorite parts of the afternoon actually happened after the proposal.
His mom surprised them by stopping by with a bottle of champagne so they could celebrate before we wandered through downtown Charleston for portraits. It was such a thoughtful touch, and I think it gave them a chance to finally slow down and soak it all in.
The rest of the session felt less like a photo shoot and more like I was tagging along with two people who had just gotten the best news of their lives.
They couldn’t stop looking at the ring.
Then they’d look back at each other.
Then they’d laugh all over again.
Every few minutes, one of them would say, “This doesn’t even feel real.” Or, “It’s like a fever dream.”
Honestly… it kind of felt that way for me too.
Somewhere along the way, they started FaceTiming everyone they loved. One by one, friends answered with huge smiles and happy screams. They held up the ring and got to relive the proposal all over again through each phone call.
One of those calls was to the sweet couple whose proposal I photographed last year. They had actually recommended me to them, which made the whole moment feel incredibly full circle. Charleston really is a small world sometimes.
By the end of the session, it felt like I had spent the afternoon celebrating with them instead of simply taking engagement photos.
Proposal days always disappear in the blink of an eye. One minute I’m hiding behind my camera, waiting for him to get down on one knee. The next, we’re wandering through Charleston with champagne in hand. They’re floating on cloud nine and trying to convince themselves this is actually real.
Then, before any of us are ready, it’s over.
And somehow it always feels over much too soon.
Why The Battery Is One of My Favorite Places for a Charleston Proposal
Now let’s talk about the location, because it really couldn’t have been more perfect.
The Battery has everything people picture when they imagine Charleston.
Historic homes.
Palm trees.
Massive live oaks.
The harbor stretching out beside you.
Even with the wind trying its hardest to steal the show, Charleston still managed to show off.
Actually… I think the weather made everything better.
The breeze kept catching her dress.
Her hair danced around her face.
The bright Southern sun created these beautiful dramatic shadows against the old homes.
Nothing looked overly polished.
Everything felt alive.
I Still Get Nervous Every Time
People always ask if I get nervous before a proposal.
Every single time.
I’m standing there with a camera, trying to look like I belong, while someone a few feet away is about to ask the biggest question of their life. They have no idea I’m there. She has no idea what’s about to happen. Somehow, I end up holding my breath right along with him.
Then it happens.
She says yes.
And just like that, two lives change forever.
I know it sounds cheesy, but I don’t think I’ll ever get over being invited into moments like these.
